The pure and sparkling waters of the Red Sea hold more history than its calm waters. For more than 40 years, the mysterious wreck of the Georgios G - which originally set off as a freighter - has been part of the gorgeous coastal landscape, but one day it reached shore, engulfed in flames, in contrast to the serene skeletal beauty we know today. Georgios Gee was built in England in 1949, and launched into the sea as a freight carrier 9 years later. In 1978, when the ship was stranded on coral reefs off the Saudi coast in the Gulf of Aqaba, its crew had no idea of the deadly cargo hold at the heart of the ship when they were striving to restart the engine, and did not notice the presence of high-explosive particles of flour in the air. The grains of flour burned instantly, and as the tanker filled with flour, the ship sank in an inferno that lasted several days. Today, the preservation of the creatures that took the shipwrecks as an oasis, such as corals, sponges, fish and turtles, has become an important part of preserving the marine environment in NEOM.
